Let Me Introduce Myself

“My name is Greg.”

Hello. My name is Greg. I am a serial tech enthusiast and lifelong learner. Although my formal tertiary education is in the field of IT, I am in no way an expert in that field. Instead, my vocation has been in risk management and insurance for all 17 years of my adult working life. I think that’s okay though because I get to earn a living “helping people” and can still enjoy tech as an avocation. I do get to use a computer every day, so that’s something! My personal passion in tech is honed by perusing hundreds of headlines on tech blogs, adopting new tech early and boldly, and, of course, helping family with their tech headaches (shout out to Mom, I fixed that spreadsheet formula for you…again 😁).

“I have already failed miserably”

This is the inaugural post of what I plan to be at least 24 posts in 2020. If that sounds like a New Year’s Resolution or otherwise a goal, that’s because it is. Like any good New Year’s Resolution, I have already failed miserably two weeks into the year. You see, my original goal was one post per week [checks calendar, ah yes, starting behind already]. But I forgave myself for my failure and readjusted my goal to be more Attainable. As a wise colleague taught me (shout out to TL!), it’s smart to make a goal a SMART goal.

  • Specific: Write 26 blog posts in 2020 about tech topics that I find interesting and I think my friends, family, and colleagues might benefit from.
  • Measurable: 24 blog posts, two per month
  • Attainable: I quickly realized that one per week was too much and adjusted the goal to two per month. Life is busy, and I don’t particularly enjoy writing.
  • Relevant: I truly enjoy the stuff I’m writing about. Various topics I’ll write about have come up in one-on-one conversations with my coworkers, and this blog is a way to disseminate that info for a broader audience.
  • Time-based: 2020. (What a cool year!)

“You will experience deep care and community.”

Besides this blog fulfilling a personal goal, I’m also using it to live out a core principle at the firm where I work: You will experience deep care and community. (That’s the inspiration of this blog’s title, by the way). I share my passion of tech with those around me because I care. Sometimes it’s because I think a gadget is cool, but often times I share a tip about a service I use that I think can legitimately help people be more efficient at work or more secure with data. One of my inspirations for starting this endeavor was a conversation with my team leader (shout out to EL!) about the credit card data breach at Wawa. In fact, one of the first topics I’ll write about is personal finance. I hope you’ll stay tuned!
